Interzone report of September 2007

French version

Previous report of August 2007

Next report of October 2007

Between 2 reports, see the news in the blog Interzone News and Blogs

For the new comers: The reports of Interzone contain the monthly activities of the members of the group in different domains. As we are about 400 people in the world, all different, the whole might appear at first sight as an incongruous medley. For more information on the subjects developed here, please refer to the previous reports since 1997 in the page Information on Interzone

Paul O'Donovan : " "Carlton Road ~The Street where I live"

Hi all,

LA FETABIZOT :

Jean-François Bizot, the publisher of the magazine of the seventies Actuel http://paul.glagla.free.fr/actuel.htm , died recently. Bernard Bacos has put some pages on line about him and friends : Jean-François BIZOT 's friends paid him a tribute on Sunday September 23rd 2007 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. This homage was not really sad, as Jean-François would have liked it, in spite of an ambiant gravity. Some messages of farewell from artist on scene were very touching , I am thinking about the African musicians who gave back to Bizot the attraction he had for this continent and its culture and which he shared so well.

Pictures of the "Fêtabizot", taken by Catherine Faux : http://paris70.free.fr/fetabizot.htm and : http://paris70.free.fr/jfbizotdc.htm http://paris70.free.fr/actuel.htm

Interzone Creations....

I have put on line the printed version of the catalogue of Interzone Creations: see at http://www.inter-zone.org/cat1.html , http://www.inter-zone.org/cat2.html, http://www.inter-zone.org/cat3.html, http://www.inter-zone.org/cat4.html, http://www.inter-zone.org/cat5.html, http://www.inter-zone.org/cat6.html, http://www.inter-zone.org/cat7.html, http://www.inter-zone.org/cat8.html It is the result of ten years work and collaboration. I have not counted the number of people involved here, but we are quite a lot.

Now the question is : what do we do with all this at the scale of the Zone ? As far as the selling is concerned, each creator deals with it personally. So how can we make it more effective at the scale of the whole group, while remaining on the bases we have put up of rules of trade respecting the zone's structure and spirit ?

...and Interzone Economy:

This question has led in the past years to a research in the economical field : see the rubric Economy http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/9445/economy.html in the site Interzone Academy http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/9445/ , research based upon general semantics, a non-Aristotelian logic invented by Alfred Korzybski after the first world war. As a result, I called the type of economy which came out of it "non-Aristotelian economy".

The funny thing here was that people who were part of this research took it as a zone experiment as the other ones (dreamachine, etc.), more than as a serious way to really get money. Though I am keeping on digging the subject and it comes out that it might represent a relevant path to get out of the tricks of present economy : we made it at the Zone scale without involving money as a group, because here money would have been a source of complications.

In France those articles have awaken the interest of a number of people in the economical area. So I suggest that Zoners whose works are in the catalog join for going on with a common research and work about it.

From most of the contacts which I have had about it in France, it comes out that people involved in economy can hardly come into it, due to the Aristotelian postulates of present economy , if they are not trained at general semantics. Though Zoners who got interested in it since the start had no problem to understand it, without learning GS first. Though Burroughs had followed Korzybski's courses, and applied GS in his writing and researches, so his work is in some way a vector for transmission of GS concepts.

=> a new site : Sémantique general et sciences humaines ...

I have started a new site on general semantics and human sciences, which is going to host a number of pages about applying GS, specially in economy: http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/index.htm The first pages on line are :

Home page : http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/

De la théorie à la pratique http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/theoriepratique.htm

Economie http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/economie.htm

Economie A / Economie non-A http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/ecoa-nona.htm

Enseignement http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/enseign.htm

Publications http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/publications.htm

Liens http://semantique.generale.googlepages.com/liens.htm

The pages and contents are going to be improved in the following days. At the moment it contains a translation program http://reverso.nouvelobs.com/textonly/default.asp , though the best would be to make an English version., if I get time for it.

I am going to add to it a number of interactive tools so it can become a place of exchanges, though I'll avoid a forum, due to the number of trolls and spammers who pollute them.

... and Interzone work :

A friend of mine, Philippe Medina, invited me to Viadeo http://www.viadeo.com, a site which provide pages for CV, and allows connections and exchanges with members of different countries, and opened to different kind of groups. I am going to test it and if it reveals itself efficient, we might create an Interzone group there and see what comes out of it.

There are conversations, discourse and heart to hearts regarding the Lower East Side, William Burroughs, Sid Vicious, the loneliness of the city crowd, Patti Smith, Richard Hell, heroin, Leee Black Childers, Johnny Thunders, Herbert Huncke, Brendan Behan, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Nico, and the island of Manhattan.

Its free so just appear from 7pm at Browns Shoe Shop, 61 Wilton Way, Hackney, London E8 .This event is part of the Hackney Write To Ignite Literary Festival.

An innovative Carte Blanche
Giving an internationally renowned artist carte blanche is a key idea that emanates from the director of the Palais de Tokyo, Marc-Olivier Wahler. Placed at the centre of the decision-making process determining the programming of the Palais de Tokyo, the artist is free to concoct an entire exhibition. His or her vision is given an auspicious setting and sufficient time to develop into a visual arts world that is always unique. As well as offering a kind of map of the artist's brain, desires and influences, giving carte blanche to an artist provides an opportunity to approach the processes of creation and aesthetic cross-referencing from a novel angle. Artists are never where we expect them to be. They look at our reality, our everyday life, but also the works of their contemporaries, in a unique and enlightened way.

A unique artistic gesture
With THE THIRD MIND, Ugo Rondinone offers us a unique journey. An MRI scan of his influences, inclinations and obsessions, the exhibition is constructed as a stroll through a brain in perpetual activity, going straight to the source of the artist's references and discoveries. For the first time his gift for building systems of connections -- an aptitude which has made Ugo Rondinone famous -- is placed at the service of the works of other artists, not his own. The systems of connections activated as well as the artists and works chosen make THE THIRD MIND an exhibition that no curator/art historian would ever have been able to dream up.

UGO RONDINONE presents works by artists from the 1960s to the present, devoting a room, for example, to the monumental sculptures of Ronald Bladen, which he connects with Cady Noland's silkscreens on aluminium and Nancy Grossmann's disturbing masks.

Ricardo Mbarkho: RAMI. October 4 -15, 2007 in Beirut

"Art and New Media" seminar at R A M I - International Encounters on Arts and Multimedia

With this seminar given by Ricardo Mbarkho at RAMI, participants will widen their knowledge, experiments and research in art using new media. They will study and think the New Technologies of Information and Communication (Internet/Cyberspace, mobiles, satellites, digital networks, interactive games, etc.) with their impact on the artist's social and political environment, and how this impact is or could be shaped in their projects. So what are the new possibilities to experiment with? How to collaborate with electronic engineers and scientists for this purpose? What are the new esthetics that were never possible before the invention of the virtual/cyberspace, of the interactivity, and of the digital network with the Internet?

This seminar is theory and aesthetic oriented; a research laboratory in new media art is thus implemented in class. The aim is to cover a quick overview on the history of new media art in order to analyze art works and understand the judgment criterion for this new esthetic. The participants will be constantly oriented to define and locate their positioning as artists operating in the new media field, within the global today's art practices.

RAMI:
The RAMI project is an international platform for experimentation, exchange and circulation dedicated to contemporary creation, digital tools and multimedia in the Mediterranean. (Lebanon, Egypt, France - 2006/2007)

October 4 -15, 2007 in Beirut / Step 5

Developed by SHAMS-Beirut, ZINC/ECM-Marseilles, l'ATELIER of Alexandria and ASTAR-Milan between September 2006 and December 2007, the RAMI project is hold in 7 steps in Marseille, Aix, Beirut and Alexandria.
In this step, three workshops, two research seminars, one technical unit and several "cartes blanches" will be animated by French, Italian, Lebanese and Egyptian artists.
